ECV_small MANILA - President Arroyo should give others a chance to lead the country and tell her allies to stop efforts to amend the 1987 Constitution, which only aims to extend her stay in power beyond 2010, Christian leader Eddie Villanueva said Friday.

"Ang mahalaga sa lahat ay mailibing itong con-ass (constituent assembly resolution) na ito at mabigyan ng pagkakataon ang mga Pilipino na mamili ng lider nila minus election manipulation (What’s important is to bury con-ass and give Filipinos a chance to elect a new leader minus election manipulation)," Villanueva told radio dzMM when asked if he is planning to run again for president.

Villanueva, who lost in the 2004 presidential election, said Filipinos would have to make sure that there will be elections in 2010 first before he decides if he should join the presidential race again. He said he will run "if Filipinos are ready for change."

The evangelist said Mrs. Arroyo’s refusal to tell her allies in the House of Representatives to set aside the efforts for Charter change is a clear indication that she does not intend to leave Malacañang.

"Umaapaw ang palatandaan (There is an outpouring of evidence). It appears the sitting president does not want to leave," he said. "If she really respects the Constitution, she will give a clear order to her allies in Congress to stop this nonsense (con-ass)."

Villanueva said there is another way to discourage Mrs. Arroyo from staying in power. He said the people should show Mrs. Arroyo and her allies that they are seriously against the "rape of the Constitution."

The evangelist has threatened to call on all supporters of his party, Bangon Pilipinas, to take to the streets once con-ass pushes through.

He claimed the group, which includes members of the Jesus Is Lord Movement, numbers about seven million.

Villanueva said his supporters would join other groups, including the Catholic church and the civil society, to stop con-ass and ensure that elections will be held in 2010.

BAGONG PILIPINAS, BAGONG PILIPINO MOVEMENT

STATEMENT OF BRO. EDDIE C. VILLANUEVA

10 June 2009

Two days before the nation marks her 111th year of declaration of independence from the hands of her foreign colonizers, we, the sovereign Filipino people of today, are again given the opportunity to make a stand for our freedom, our rights, our democracy – this time against all the evil forces that maliciously toy with our hard-earned liberty by way of pushing for the ill-timed and illegal way of changing our Constitution despite our adamant collective stand against the move that might put our nation in peril.

The importance and significance of today’s peaceful and orderly anti-Charter change rally in Makati City and in various places nationwide cannot be overemphasized. It is an occasion for all democracy loving Filipinos to show our unity and solidarity in the face of this ruthless threat to the very soul and spirit of our nation. It is also an opportunity for all of us to go beyond our individual, personal, social, religious, even political, differences and become one people in this crusade for our nation’s sake.

The House Resolution 1109 is clearly a shameless display of arrogance and complete disregard for our basic sentiments. Let us turn this deplorable manipulation around and make it an opportunity for us all to show that we are going to stand up for our rights and freedom – and nothing is going to stop us. Not threats, not intimidation, not lies, not even the rain that pro-Cha-cha people are hoping will pour to dampen our spirits.

MANILA, Philippines—Congress has practically abdicated the power of the purse to the executive branch, failing to scrutinize the annual national budget thoroughly and facilitating corruption in the process, a UN-financed study released Wednesday said.

“Congress is given four months to debate the budget. But, more often than not, debates—particularly in the House of Representatives—deal not with policy but rather parochial concerns,” said the 2008/2009 Philippine Human Development Report (PHDR).

“Questions about agency performance are asked only intermittently and superficially. Cost estimates of budget proposals are rarely challenged,” said the PHDR, sponsored by the UN Development Programme (UNDP) and the New Zealand Agency for International Development.

“Weak accountability is facilitated by weak congressional oversight, not only in practice, but in law. In fact, it is the executive and not Congress that wields effective power of the purse,” said Toby Monsod of the NGO Human Development Network, which conducted the study. Monsod is one of the principal authors of the report.

Written by IBON Media

Results of the April 2009 nationwide survey of research group IBON Foundation show that most Filipinos are not in favor of Charter change (Cha-cha).

Eighty percent (80%) of respondents who are aware of the current moves on Cha-cha said they do not approve of proposed amendments to the 1987 Constitution. This is an increase from the 79.3% in the January 2009 survey round, and the 77.4% in October 2008.

The top three regions that registered the highest opposition to Cha-cha were Western Mindanao (95%), Central Mindanao (94.5%), and the Cordillera Autonomous Region (90.5%). In the National Capital Region, 88.8% are against amending the Constitution.

The latest IBON survey was conducted on April 17-26 among 1,496 respondents across various sectors and regions nationwide and has a margin of error of plus or minus three percent.

DAVAO CITY, Philippines—The Philippines remains in the control of oligarchs because the government is beholden to them, according to Chief Justice Reynato Puno.

“If you look at the wealth of the country, [you will see that] the control is in the hands of very few people,” Puno said on Friday evening at the launch of the Moral Force Movement.

Because the government also remains beholden to “those who control the wealth of the nation,” a system that can help Filipinos move forward is not possible, said the Chief Justice, who has been campaigning for national moral recovery.

“If you have that kind of predicament, we will never have a healthy democratic system. The rich are very few and the poor are the multitude,” he said.

MANILA, Philippines – There is a Filipino in every country in the world.

This fact, often treated as a joke, has actually been established by the Philippine Migration and Development Statistical Almanac of the Institute of Migration and Development Issues (IMDI).

“There are 239 countries identified to have Filipinos,” said IMDI executive director Jeremaiah Opiniano, writing in the foreword to the report.

Of this total, 209 are members of the United Nations, while 30 are non-members, including islands and territories unfamiliar to many Filipinos.

“Filipinos go to these countries as temporary migrants, permanent migrants and undocumented or irregular migrants,” the report said.

The almanac was published last year by the IMDI, a non-government organization concerned with migration issues, to document the total number of Filipinos who have gone overseas, whether they left temporarily or permanently, and with or without proper documents.

According to Opiniano, the almanac used data from administrative sources, surveys and selected quantitative studies.

This was Bro. Eddie Villanueva’s battle cry during the launch of Bagong Pilipinas, Bagong Pilipino Movement last March 28, 2009 at the jam-packed Araneta Coliseum. It was indeed a historic and inspiring night, the fervor for change that was planted in our hearts last 2004 was once again coming back like a thunder roaring in our hearts and minds willing to wage war against the established status quo that change is an impossible dream to be realized in a country like the Philippines.

I flew all the way from Bacolod just to attend the launching and show my support for Bro. Eddie, the person who was very instrumental to the person that I have become. He inspired me so much and taught me the importance of loving this country and doing your own share for the betterment of the people. I will forever be grateful to Bro. Eddie for taking a stand last 2004 and inspiring millions of people to be modern day heroes with a mission to transform this country.

Now that the 2010 presidential elections is just around the corner, a lot of traditional politicians who have been in power for quite a time already are offering themselves to lead the nation with a promise of a better life. TV Ads are already aired on TV, would-be candidates talking about governmental and societal problems such as corruption, injustices, bribery, poverty, extra-judicial killings, etc., watching their TV ads, I cannot help but laugh and feel disgusted because I ask myself, why are these people talking about such problems and yet what have they done to address these problems? Isn’t it the main reason why they are in government to better the lives of the people? What have they been doing in lofty government positions? I’m sorry to say this, but come 2010 elections, I will not allow myself to be fooled by these people and much more I will not allow the millions of people to be fooled by them as well. I will try my best to be an instrument in educating them to vote wisely and to choose what is right. Inform them that there’s still hope or “may pag-asa pa!”

Moreover the word of the LORD came to me, saying, Jeremiah, what do you see? And I said, I see a branch of an almond tree. Then said the LORD unto me, You have seen well: for I am ready to perform My wordJeremiah 1:11-12

Resurrection always brings a message of hope. There is nothing more hope-boosting than knowing that the dead, yes the DEAD, may rise again!

The resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ is the single redemptive event that perfected mankind’s salvation and deliverance from sin, at the same time proving that faith in Him that holds the indisputable power over death is not useless.

Jesus, the Son of God, had to taste death to give His sinless life as a sacrifice for all the transgressions of mankind (Isaiah 53: 3-6; Hebrews 2:9). When He cried out on the cross: “It is finished!” (John 19:30) every requirement for the forgiveness of the sin of every man, under the Law and the Commandments, was satisfied! Every work needed to be done to set man free from the dominion of the evil one was indeed finished!

The Lord Jesus was the Lamb of God who, by His sacrifice on the Cross, had taken away the sins of the world. The Heavenly Father proved to all that Jesus’ sacrifice on the Cross was accepted as payment for man’s debt when He raised Him from the dead after three days of being in the grave. Because of the resurrection, those who have received Jesus as their Savior and Lord are now assured of eternal life, and just like Him, will also experience their own bodily resurrection (I Corinthians 15:12-22)!

The resurrection was also the message of God to Israel in the time of the prophets. Every time the Israelites were chastised by God because of their collective sin and backsliding from their covenant with God, the Lord raised up prophets to bring His message of restoration to their nation. One such prophet was Jeremiah.
